RicCardo Balbo

President of the Francesco Morelli Foundation

Riccardo Balbo, an architect and Doctor of Research (PhD) in Theory and Construction of Architecture, serves as the Chief Academic Officer and Academic Director of the IED Group. He also holds the position of President of the Francesco Morelli Foundation, which oversees the European Institute of Design.

Additionally, he serves as an expert for ANVUR (National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research System), specialising in the assessment of the AFAM system. He also holds the prestigious position of National Foreign Expert for the Government of the People's Republic of China, providing consultancy services to various firms and institutions.

Balbo served as the Director of IED Turin until 2017. From 2008 to 2013, he led the Master's programmes in Urban Design and Regeneration, as well as Digital Architectural Design, at the University of Salford’s School of the Built Environment (SOBE) in the UK. During his tenure there, he played a pivotal role in establishing the research group MIND (Mediated Intelligence in Design).

He is a former member of the Research and Documentation Centre focusing on technology, architecture, and urban development (Polytechnic of Turin), as well as the ICT in Construction research institute (SOBE/Salford) and TSC - Trasmettere la CittĂ  Sostenibile (Fondazione Ordine Architetti Torino), while also providing consultancy services to the Fondazione Ordine Architetti Torino.

At the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic of Turin, he has delivered lectures on Urban Morphology, Digital Tools and Design, Architectural Design, and Urban Design. Running his architectural studio from 1992 to 2010, he worked on projects across both public and private domains. His research focus encompasses digital architectural design, design-driven innovation, design education, knowledge and creativity, urban regeneration, urban redevelopment, and smart city initiatives.
